A gift to McCain?
Did the Supreme Court of California do John McCain a big favor by declaring gay marriage legal here?
Like Instapundit, I favor allowing marriage between two consenting adults regardless of gender, but I object to it being forced on the public by the courts: this is a matter of social policy for the people to decide through their legislature or directly, via referendum. Marriage is not an inalienable right.
However, there is a measure going through the process of qualifying for the November ballot that, if passed, would amend the state constitution to define marriage as heterosexual-only. I imagine it will qualify, and thus many California conservatives, who haven't been too thrilled with McCain and might otherwise have stayed home, will show up to vote for the initiative and, while they're there, McCain. This could make the prospect of holding California, which has been reliable for the Democrats for several elections, much more dicey, thus forcing them to spend a lot of time and money defending it.
As for me, I'll split the ticket, voting against the initiative and for McCain.
