France at the crossroads?

France holds the first round of its presidential elections this weekend, and they come at an important time in the nation's modern history: faced with high unemployment, a chronically stagnant economy, a large, self-segregating and increasingly hostile Muslim population, and a growing realization that its statist social model just doesn't work, many French are considering a shift to the Right. Whether this means embracing free economics a la Thatcher and Reagan or a surrender to the xenophobic proto-fascism of Jean-Marie Le Pen remains to be seen. Neo-NeoCon considers France's "decision time."
