Tigerhawk speculates on a possible imminent deal between North Korea and the United States, Japan, China, Russia, and South Korea to eliminate North Korea's nuclear program. He also wonders why this news, which has been leaking for several days now, has received so little attention in the press.
My first thoughts would be "Anna Nicole Smith and astronauts in diapers," but I think there's more to it. The mainstream media simply hates George Bush and, since 2000, it's been evident to anyone with eyes to see that they will either ignore or spin negatively any news that might reflect well on the administration. And they'll have help from their allies in Congress. Take Korea: Tigerhawk cites example after example of Democrats and MSM sources criticizing Bush for not engaging Dystopia North Korea directly, for preferring a multilateral approach. Yet, in Iraq, these same people and organizations ripped him for not being multilateral enough. The only principle involved is say whatever is necessary to take down George Bush, regardless of truth. (Jules Crittenden has more on this.)
But, back to North Korea, this would be a huge breakthrough if true. And, unlike the farcical Agreed Framework deal worked out between the Clinton Administration and Pyongyang, this would require verified North Korean compliance before substantial aid is delivered. The US would agree to recognize North Korea and establish an embassy (and vice-versa), and we would likely get information on North Korean aid for other nuclear programs, such as Iran's. (That was part of the deal with Libya, on which this agreement may be based.) Beyond any doubt, it would be a major victory for the Bush Administration and US diplomacy.
Which means it will probably be buried on the back page.
