Muslim officials call for censorship and death

Remember this folks, Islam is a religion of tolerance, unless you happen satirize or otherwise say things critical of Islam or Muhammad. Two items from the pages of The Volokh Conspiracy:

Editor-in-Chief Samir Sadagatoglu and reporter Rafiq Tagi of the independent newspaper Senet were arrested on November 15, after publishing an article that alleged Islam's influence was hindering Azerbaijan's economic and political development. The Nasimi District Court initially ordered that Sadagatoglu and Tagi be kept in pretrial detention for two months with a trial expected to begin in mid-January, according to international press reports.

But on Thursday, Nasimi District Court Judge Gulnar Tagizade extended the pretrial detention for another two months, according to CPJ sources and local press reports....

The journalists are charged with inciting national, ethnic, or religious hatred under Article 283 of the penal code, which could bring up to five years in prison upon conviction, according to international press reports.

The whole report is here. This same incident also drew down a death-fatwa on the heads of the editor and reporter from a senior Iranian cleric.

Meanwhile, in the United States, a board member for the Islamist front Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) has petitioned the Justice Department to abridge the free speech of organizations that are part of the dread "Jewish lobby." We'll just forget about that little thing called the First Amendment. It's un-Islamic, anyway.

Maybe she's a buddy of Mearshimer and Walt.

CORRECTION: Eugene Volokh corrected his earlier post regarding the letter to the Justice Department: the author, Dr. Anisa abd al-Fatah is no longer a board member of CAIR, and apparently hasn't been one for several years. My apologies for passing along an error.

UPDATE: Welcome, readers of The Virtuous Republic!
