Man, this didn't take long. The new Congress hasn't even convened and the Democrats are already facing scandal and shooting themselves in the foot. Let's have a look, shall we?
First, Speaker-in-waiting Nancy Pelosi has endorsed the candidacy of Rep. John Murtha (D -CutAndRun) for Majority Leader. This is the same Murtha who has argued fatuously that our Army is "broken" and has called for a "strategic redeployment" to Okinawa. This is the same Jack Murtha who was an unindicted co-conspirator in the Abscam scandal and is world famous for his pork-barrel spending. This of course, has ticked off Democrats who bought into the "Republican culture of corruption" meme Pelosi was pushing, and who think House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (a moderate Democrat well-liked by member of both parties and thus probably anathema to Nancy) deserves the promotion. Captain Ed calls it an "unforced error," while Michael Barone speculates about why Nancy did it.
Meanwhile, the tar from the Abramoff scandal threatens to splash 6-8 Democratic senators in the near future, if this report can be believed. Speculation has centered on Majority Leader Presumptive Harry Reid, but a few other names have been tossed out. If even part of this is true, that Democratic majority in the Senate will start looking even more fragile. (Which probably explains why they were busy kissing Joe Lieberman's butt.)
Of course, the Republicans didn't earn the moniker "The Stupid Party" for nothing. According to this bit of news, Trent Lott (R -Pork) has won election as Senate Minority Whip. Great, not only is this the man who praised former Dixiecrat Strom Thurmond (that'll really help with gaining Black votes for Republicans), but he is one of the biggest Republican treasury-raiders and pork-barrel dippers who helped cost us the last election. And he has expressed open contempt for efforts to bring some sunshine to federal appropriations.
Maybe we don't want to win in 2008?
UPDATE: And here's another one. It seems Senator Barack Obama (D - Illinois), whom many are already anointing President seven years before his inauguration, and Representative Luis Gutierrez (D - Illinois) both are involved in some, shall we say, questionable land deals with a Chicago developer under federal grand jury investigation.
